In 2007 Cal Ripken was named as a Public Diplomacy Envoy by the U.S. State Department. In that role he travels to foreign countries and serves as a good will ambassador, meeting with people and connecting with kids through baseball and softball clinics.
In 2007 he traveled to China and brought along his friend and former teammate B.J. Surhoff. In 2008 he traveled to Nicaragua with former teammate and Nicaraguan legend Dennis Martinez. This week he is in Japan and spending time with children impacted by the devastating tsunami and earthquake that struck the country earlier this year. Former Oriole Brady Anderson is making the trip with Cal and they will be conducting clinics for kids across Japan and proving them with merchandise and baseball equipment in partnership with MLB Japan and Ripken corporate partners Under Armour and Rawlings.
